Timing Seed to the Westchester Seasons
Hydroseeding in White Plains is mostly a question of timing. The city has a humid continental climate with four distinct seasons: January averages 29.8 degrees, July averages 74 degrees, and there are about 18 days a year at 90 or above. Precipitation is plentiful in every month. That pattern gives cool-season grass two strong seeding windows and two hard ones.
The two good windows
Late August through September is the first choice. Soil is warm, nights cool down and the lawn has two months of growth before frost. Mid-April through May is the second. Hydroseed put down in July faces the heat; seed put down in November may not sprout before winter.
Hills and old swamp
The Battle of White Plains in 1776 was fought mainly on Chatterton Hill, just west of what was then a swamp and is now downtown. That mix of hillside and low, once-wet ground still shows in yards. On sloped lots we add a tackifier or BFM; on low lots we check drainage and grade before seeding.
The Bronx River
The Bronx River flows south past White Plains on its way to the East River. Under a 2006 agreement, White Plains and neighboring municipalities committed to stop sewage discharges into the river. Sediment from construction is the other threat to it. Silt fence and inlet protection go up first on any job that drains toward the river corridor.

White Plains Questions
When is the latest I can seed in fall?
Aim for mid-September to early October. Later seed may sprout but often lacks the roots to handle frost heave.
Can I seed in July if I water a lot?
It can work with heavy watering, but heat stress and weeds make it riskier. Late summer is a safer bet.
My lot is on a hill near Chatterton Hill Park. Any special prep?
Slopes get a tackifier or bonded fiber matrix so the seed and mulch do not slide in a storm.
Do commercial sites in White Plains need silt fence?
Most disturbed sites that drain toward storm drains or the river need sediment control. We install to the approved plan.
How soon will hydroseed sprout here?
In warm soil, usually within one to two weeks for most cool-season mixes.
