Grass Where a Prairie Used to Be
Hydroseeding in Garden City starts on unusual ground. In 1869 Alexander Turney Stewart bought part of the Hempstead Plains, an open native grassland that once covered roughly 60,000 acres of central Long Island, and laid out Garden City on it. Stewart described the plains as a barren waste he would cover with roads, homes and settlers. The flat, glacially sorted ground he built on is still under every lawn in the village.
Flat ground, careful grading
The Plains formed from outwash of glacial sediment more than ten thousand years ago, which left them vast and flat. In a village of manicured yards, small grade mistakes show. We fine grade so water moves off the lawn toward the street, then seed on a smooth bed so the finished lawn has no dips or ridges.
Orderly by design
Garden City used a strict zoning code to protect Stewart's plan, and it still feels orderly. Lawn renovation here is often about matching neighbors: the same deep green, no bare edges along the walk. Overseeding after core aeration keeps an older lawn dense; full renovation handles yards torn up by additions or drainage work.
A nod to the native grassland
The surviving Hempstead Plains remnants hold about 250 kinds of plants, including federally endangered species. For homeowners who want a low-mow border or a strip along a fence, a native grass mix gives a lower-maintenance edge that fits the land's history. We can hydroseed a native border beside a regular lawn.
Commercial and institutional sites
The village is home to three golf courses and plenty of institutional grounds. On larger renovations we set silt fence and inlet protection around the work, then hydroseed or hydromulch as soon as grading is done.

- Golf courses. The village has three golf courses; the first was laid out in 1896 and is now the Garden City Golf Club.
- Zoning. Garden City used a strict zoning code during its 1930s building boom to preserve Stewart's planned vision.

Garden City Questions
Can you match my new lawn to the neighbors'?
We pick a seed blend close to the established lawns on the street and prep the bed carefully. The color evens out over the first season.
Is native grass allowed in Garden City?
Village rules govern front yard appearance, so check before converting a front lawn. Side and rear borders are the usual place for a native strip.
My yard is flat. Why does it still puddle?
Even flat outwash ground needs a slight slope toward the street or a drain. Small settling around old work is a common cause, and regrading fixes it.
Do you aerate before overseeding?
On compacted older lawns, yes. Core aeration opens the soil so the hydroseed slurry reaches it.
Do you work on larger grounds, not just homes?
Yes. Institutional and commercial sites get the same sediment control and hydroseeding, scaled up.
