Seedbeds That Survive a Downpour

Hydroseeding in Islip has to plan for rain. On August 12 and 13, 2014, Islip set a New York State record for 24-hour rainfall at 13.57 inches, with more than an inch falling in nine minutes. Roads including the Southern State Parkway and Sunrise Highway flooded. A storm like that will move seed and soil on any bare lot, so we build every job to handle a cloudburst.

What storm-ready seeding looks like

First, fine grade so water leaves the yard without cutting channels. Second, use enough hydromulch to cover the soil completely, and add tackifier where water concentrates. Third, protect the low points: swales and drainage paths get a bonded fiber matrix or a blanket. On construction sites, silt fence and inlet protection stay up until the grass is established.

Low ground by the bay

Islip sits barely above sea level near the shore, and more than a third of its 162.8 square miles is water. It includes parts of Fire Island and Captree Island across the Great South Bay. Yards near the bay drain slowly, so grading for even a small fall matters, and sediment control on any job near a canal keeps soil out of the bay.

Fast suburban growth

Within a decade after World War II, Islip turned from a farming community into a suburb, growing from about 71,000 people in 1950 to 280,000 in 1970. Housing developments went up on old farms. Those lawns are now older than most of their owners, which is why renovation and overseeding make up much of our Islip work.

Islip Questions

What happens if a big storm hits right after seeding?

Some loss is possible in an extreme storm. Good grading, full mulch coverage and a blanket or BFM in the low spots keep it to a minimum, and we can touch up washed areas.

My yard near the bay never drains. Can you fix that?

Often a small regrade helps. In some spots the water table is just high, and we pick a seed mix that tolerates damp soil.

Do you put silt fence around house construction?

Yes, plus inlet protection on nearby storm drains, before digging starts.

Is overseeding worth it on a 1960s lawn?

Usually. Aerate, top-dress with topsoil and overseed, and an old lawn can thicken up in one season.

Can you seed a drainage swale?

Yes. Water concentrates in a swale, so those get a stapled blanket or a bonded fiber matrix rather than mulch alone.
