Lawns and Runoff Near the Great South Bay
Hydroseeding in the Town of Babylon happens in a place that is mostly water. Of the town's 114.3 square miles, 62 are water, more than half. Babylon runs from the Nassau line to the Great South Bay and includes part of Fire Island, Captree Island and Gilgo State Park on the barrier beach. Inland lots sit on the gently sloping outwash plain that runs south from the island's moraines toward the Atlantic.
Every yard drains to the bay
On ground this flat and this close to tidal water, almost every yard's runoff ends up in a canal, creek or the bay. On construction and renovation jobs we put up silt fence and protect storm inlets before work starts, and we cover the bare soil with hydromulch as soon as grading is finished. A covered seedbed releases very little sediment compared to raw dirt.
Flat lots need a fall
Where the ground barely slopes, a new lawn can end up sitting in water. We fine grade for a gentle fall away from the house and use topsoil to fill low spots. Then the hydroseed goes on an even bed so the lawn comes in uniform.
Parks on both ends
Belmont Lake State Park sits in the northeastern part of town, and the barrier island holds Gilgo, an undeveloped preserve, plus part of Robert Moses State Park. For homeowners near those green spaces who want something other than turf in a back corner, a native grass mix is an option for borders and low spots.
Older town, older lawns
The town was formed in 1872 by splitting off from Huntington, and its villages and hamlets filled in over the following century. We do a lot of lawn renovation and overseeding here, plus new lawn installation after additions.

Babylon Questions
My canal-front yard is flat. How do you seed it?
We set silt fence on the canal side, grade for a slight fall away from the house and cover the seed fully with hydromulch.
Can I use a native grass mix in part of the yard?
Yes. A native mix works well in a back corner, along a fence or in a low spot you would rather not mow.
Do I need inlet protection for a small project?
If bare soil can reach a storm drain on the street, a simple inlet filter is a good idea while the work is open.
What if my soil is mostly sand?
We add topsoil or compost and use a moisture-holding mulch so seedlings do not dry out.
Do you work in Lindenhurst, West Babylon and Deer Park?
Yes, across the town's villages and hamlets.
