Two Kinds of Ground in One Town
Hydroseeding in the Town of Oyster Bay depends on which side of the hills you are on. Oyster Bay is the only town in Nassau County that stretches from the North Shore to the South Shore, so it crosses the Harbor Hill Moraine, the ridge that forms the main drainage divide in the county. Streams north of it run to Long Island Sound; streams south of it run to the bays behind the barrier islands.
North of the ridge
The North Shore side is rolling and hilly, with estate lots, wooded slopes and harbor views around Oyster Bay Harbor. Slopes like those need more than seed and water. We use erosion control blankets on steeper banks and a bonded fiber matrix where a blanket is impractical, and we keep sediment away from the harbor with silt fence on the downhill side.
South of the ridge
The southern hamlets sit on the outwash plain, where yards are flatter and the issue flips from runoff to standing water. There, the job is fine grading for a slight fall and a good topsoil bed before the hydroseed goes down.
Farmland that became housing
After World War II, housing replaced farmland across the town, and the population went from about 40,000 in 1950 to more than 290,000 by 1990. Lots built in that era often have thin topsoil that was scraped during construction. When we renovate those lawns, adding topsoil is usually part of the plan.
Services that fit both halves
- Slope stabilization and blankets on North Shore banks
- New lawn installation on regraded South Shore lots
- Perimeter silt fence and storm drain protection on building sites
- Overseeding of tired postwar lawns

Oyster Bay Geography
- Shore to shore. Oyster Bay is the only town in Nassau County that extends from the North Shore to the South Shore of Long Island.
- Drainage divide. The Harbor Hill Moraine forms Nassau County's major drainage divide; streams to its northwest flow to Long Island Sound, those to its south to the bays.
- Postwar growth. Housing replaced farmland as the town's population grew from about 40,000 in 1950 to more than 290,000 in 1990.
- Harbor shoreline. At least six of the town's 36 villages and hamlets have shores on Oyster Bay Harbor, an inlet of Long Island Sound.

Oyster Bay Questions
Do North Shore and South Shore lawns need different prep?
Yes. Hillside lots need erosion control on the slope; flat southern lots need grading so water drains. The seed can be similar, but the groundwork is not.
I have a steep bank down toward the harbor. What holds best?
On a steep bank, the surest option is a blanket stapled down on top of the fresh seed. Silt fence at the bottom keeps any early wash out of the water.
Why is the soil so thin in my 1960s yard?
Many postwar lots lost topsoil during construction. Adding a layer before seeding gives roots something to work with.
Can you hydroseed a big estate lawn?
Yes. Hydroseeding covers large areas quickly and evenly, which is one reason it is used on big properties.
Do you work in the hamlets as well as the villages?
We work throughout the town. Village rules can differ, so we check what applies to your address.
