Steep River Hills and Rolling Farm Ground
Hydroseeding in Orangetown splits into two kinds of jobs. An old description of the town quoted on its Wikipedia page notes abrupt, rocky hills in the east, with the Nyack Hills rising 300 to 500 feet along the Hudson, and a rolling or moderately hilly region in the center and west. The same account describes the soil as a reddish sandy loam mixed with clay.
Red sandy loam with clay
That mix is decent for grass but can crust over after heavy rain and seal the surface. We loosen the top few inches before seeding, add organic matter or topsoil where it is thin, and cover the seed fully with hydromulch so raindrops do not crust the bed.
Steep ground along the Hudson
The red sandstone that crops out on the eastern slopes between Piermont and Nyack was once quarried for building stone. Lots on those hills are steep. We hold them with stapled blankets or a bonded fiber matrix, and silt fence stays in at the bottom of the work.
Lake Tappan and the Hackensack
Lake Tappan, a reservoir, runs north to south through the middle of the town and crosses into New Jersey, and the Hackensack River flows south through the western part. Jobs that drain toward either need sediment control from day one: silt fence on the downhill side and inlet protection on nearby drains.

Orangetown Questions
My soil crusts after rain. Will that hurt new seed?
It can. Loosening the soil, adding organic matter and covering the seed with mulch keeps the surface from sealing.
Can you seed a steep yard above the Hudson in Nyack?
Yes. Steep yards get a blanket or a bonded fiber matrix, and silt fence below the work.
I live near Lake Tappan. Is sediment control needed?
If your project can send soil toward the reservoir or a stream, silt fence and inlet protection are a smart first step.
Do you work in Pearl River and Blauvelt?
Yes, along with Tappan, Sparkill, Piermont and the rest of the town.
Should I add topsoil before a new lawn?
If the existing layer is thin or heavy with clay, yes. We check before quoting.
