Seeding the Most Suburban Borough

Hydroseeding on Staten Island has more in common with the suburbs than with the rest of New York City. Staten Island is the least dense and most suburban of the five boroughs, and it has a lot of single-family yards, sloped lots and open ground near woods and wetlands. That makes it the borough where lawn seeding and erosion control come up most.

Todt Hill and the ridge

The summit of Todt Hill reaches 401 feet, the highest point in the five boroughs and on the Atlantic coastal plain south of Massachusetts. Steep driveways and terraced back yards along that ridge shed water quickly. On those slopes we usually pair seed with either a stapled blanket or a bonded fiber matrix, because straight seed and mulch can slide in a hard rain before roots hold it.

Glacial leftovers in the soil

The terminal moraine of the last glaciation runs along the center of the island, and glacial erratics and kettle ponds still show in the wooded areas. In practice that means rocks. Before a new lawn installation we rake out stone, add topsoil where the subsoil is gravelly, and fine grade so the hydroseed lands on an even bed.

South Shore growth and the Bluebelt

The South Shore developed rapidly from the 1960s on, after the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge opened the island to new building. Much of that area now drains into the Bluebelt, a city stormwater system built around wetlands and streams. On construction jobs near those channels, silt fence and inlet protection go in early so sediment does not end up in a Bluebelt wetland.

What we handle most

  • New lawns on regraded lots
  • Slope stabilization on hillside yards
  • Silt fence and sediment control for builders
  • Lawn repair and overseeding after storm or construction damage

Staten Island Ground Conditions

  • Todt Hill. Todt Hill rises to 401 feet, the highest point in New York City's five boroughs.
  • Terminal moraine. Rock and sediment left at the glacier's edge form a terminal moraine along the island's central portion, with erratics and kettle ponds.
  • Bluebelt. The Bluebelt stormwater program began on Staten Island and serves about 12,000 acres while preserving the city's last freshwater wetlands.
  • South Shore growth. The bridge opened central and southern Staten Island to development from the 1960s, and the population doubled between 1960 and 2000.

Staten Island Questions

My yard on Todt Hill keeps washing out. Will hydroseed hold?

On a steep pitch we do not rely on seed and paper mulch alone. A bonded fiber matrix or a blanket pinned over the seed keeps it in place long enough for roots to grip.

Why are there so many rocks in my new lawn area?

Central Staten Island sits on glacial moraine, which is loaded with stone. We rake and screen what we can and add topsoil so the seedbed is not just gravel.

I am building near a Bluebelt stream. What sediment controls do I need?

Plan on silt fence along the downhill edge and protection on nearby inlets before you dig. The exact layout depends on the plan the city approved, and we install to that plan.

Can you seed after a house is raised or rebuilt?

Yes. We fine grade the disturbed yard, bring in topsoil where needed and hydroseed once the heavy equipment is gone.

Do you overseed thin lawns on the island?

We do. Overseeding with a hydroseed slurry fills bare and thin patches without tearing out the existing turf.
